I bought an older model two horse trailer that needs some work. Mainely it’s cosmetic work but I’ve never done this before so any tips would be greatly appreciated. The floor is solid but the body needs a paint job and there is some rust damage. I’ve used a pressure washer and plan on going over it with a sander to remove as much of the loose paint as possible but what can I use to on the rust? There are some small holes that need patching. Also any advise on what type of paint to use and techniches on how to paint a trailer would be helpful. Thanks:)

mark a rectangle around the damaged panel .
then cut it out with a body grinder,
cut a new plate to fit the hole and weld it in..
rustolem paint will be great in this application

Actually, if you sand out the rusty spots real good, there is a product out called gorilla hair. You’ll find it in an auto parts store like pep boys. Directions are on the can. It’s like a auto body filler substance. Fill in the holes with this stuff and let it dry. Then sand it down the way you want it, and wha laa, all said and done with, btw, it will pass inspection too. Maco body shops use it all the time. I’ve personally used this material to restore a 74 Nova for my kid. Works real well even for super big holes.
Good Luck!

Hi there
The easy way to cover the rust….. before yo samd it down treat it with rust cure… you can get hses from any auto store.
What it does is it changes the rust to a blue black color as it cures and stops further rust in that area.
The holes….. now this is a different problem. are they hig up or low. are they about level with the horses and would the horse beable to kick through where they are,
You can clean the inside treat it then paint it.. Then line the inside walls of the trailer with ply board … the thicker the better… stops the horse damaging the metal skin of the trailer.
Before you put in the boards…. you can treat the outside. fill the holds car repair like bondo. You then sand it down and paint it… then put the board on the inside,.
As for paints you have a few options….. ‘One auto car paint…. this isnt too hardwearing and scratches =rust potential areas.
Second is use rustoleum pain.. . this has rust inhibitors in it.. more expensive but lasts longer.
Next is go to tractor supply and get pain used for tractors. If you want silver/ grey get Massey furgusson gray. Its thick paint which covers well and is hard wearing…
Also… dont paint your trailer black or a dark color… this draws the heat and makes the inside very hot in summer. Use white gray/ sliver or light blue…
If the areas that need fixing are high they use bondo… sand it… inside and out and paint…..
One word of warning… look at the rust and make sure that the trailer is structurally sound…. that the top isnt going rip off becasue its weak..
I have been to many horse shows and seen the nightmare trailer that i wouldnt tansport plants in yet alone a horse….A question for you… have you thought about a new trailer …. they dont have to cost the earth.. . I got a new 3 horse slant for $3500 a two horse straight load was $3000… just a thought… you can find them on ebay….
Good luck fixing it up…
