1.Use a grinder to remove the paint around the rust stains. You may need a sanding wheel to do this. Make sure that you take off both the paint and the primer. You may feel the surface for your fingers to check its texture. To remove thick rust, you can use a metal grinding wheel.
2.Choose only a primer ideal for painting on bare metal surfaces. Make sure as well that you find an auto spray which matches the color of your car. You may find these products at an auto supply store.
3. Prepare the spot for your primer application. First, wipe the area using paint thinner or mineral spirits. Tape newspaper in the surrounding areas within three feet. Spray coats of primer evenly. Allow it to dry overnight.
4. Sand using 400 grit wet paper. Wipe clean afterwards.
5. Spray a think coat of paint to prevent paint from sagging. Let it set for 24 hours before you pull the tape off.
6. Buff edges of the new paint to ensure smooth blending of paints. You may also apply a clear coat.
7. Let paint cure for 48 hours. Afterwards, you wash and polish the car. Make sure you don't wax the car within 30 days after painting.
