Bicycle Rim Rust Removal

by admin on July 29, 2010

2 Bicycle Rim Rust RemovalI bought an old Schwinn Breeze bicycle at the thrift on Thursday for 5 bucks. The bicycle is solid, but the rims are terribly rusty. I bought a courser steel wool, and tried removing the rust. Comes off slow, but ok. Gonna be a bitch!

to really help get the rust of the rims or anything that is rusty use PB spray just, spray it down and leave it for about ten minutes then get steel wool and do it.
works awesome!

I bought a Schwinn …
I bought a Schwinn Road bike on craigslist for $120. The rims were old and the tires were near bald, not to mention the chain was so crappy it tore off the gear changer (it’s a 10 speed). I’ve paid about $80 in repairs and still need to repair a few things but I love it. And right in front is the “Schwinn Chicago” sticker.

I’ve had the same …
I’ve had the same problem before. So I did the following. Ride & brake as usual. Then most rust came off the braking surfaces, on the rim. Wipe off & replace all the brake shoes. All other rusted chrome on the rim, where the spokes are bolted, wipe with a wax preserver to prevent further rusting. I look at this old rust as decoration.

Seems like a lot of …
Seems like a lot of work- what about a wire cup brush in a drill motor? Maybe some chrome polish or metal polish. Would probably also be easier getting the bike or wheels up at sitting hieght.
One time i got a old mountain bike off my ex that sat outside for years- i ended up selling it for $5 in a yard sale- cables were gone, all chrome rusted, even the berings inside the wheels were rusted- sometimes arent even good for parts…i used to have dozens of bikes i tinkered with and tons of parts.

Yep I know, I …
Yep I know, I always look to see where things are made now, you can’t get a usa made bike anymore, at least not that I’m aware of

but so far it’s been a good bike… but I won’t take it down stairs anymore, broke the back wheel hub doing that lol so I took it back and they fixed it

Unfortunately if …
Unfortunately if your bicycle is a WalMart Schwinn its not a genuine Schwinn. The original Schwinns were made in Chicago USA, not Taiwan. Schwinn is just a name nowadays put on a cheaply made thing just like RCA, or Zenith now. They are owned my the Pacific bicycle company. Personally i dont like the todays Schwinns, but as long as you like your bicycle thats all that matters. Hybrids are in pretty high demand. They are for the people who want the roadbike speed in a mountain bike.

craig1974 July 29, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Yeah i know to use …
Yeah i know to use the steel wool as a cheaper route. If i used an easier method to remove the rust it probably would be so expensive my profits could be ruined. I think i will just let the surface soak overnight in WD40 then use the steel wool. The wire wheel i would be worried that it would ruin the chrome though. This bicycle is not on my priority list right now. I got other bicycles to fix yet, but i will get it fixed eventually.

craig1974 July 29, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Dont use the course …
Dont use the course steel wool unless you have excessive rust on your chrome. Use a medium to fine course steel wool with WD40, or rust penetrant.

Thats cool, my …
Thats cool, my brother has a Shwin! Oh man, rusted wheels, thats horrible.Oh man everything has gone up in price due to inflation. Try to make this steel wool last so you don’t have to spray another rediculous amount of 3 bucks plus tax. You know what you need Craig? Like a spinning wire brush wheel on a drill, speeds up the process. I agree though, those rims are so freaking rusty, almost as if somebody let this bikes wheels in a puddle of water. Your doing a great job!

Peace :)
