can you repair a gas tank on a dirt bike, from corrosion?

by admin on July 2, 2010

The gas tank was left for a few years with a small amount of gas in it, so in order to not have to buy a new tank is there some kind of solution that can be poured in it and fix the inside? Or any other method, the tank is pretty expensive.. any suggestions will help

get the 3 step system by KBS Coatings. Better than Kreem which just sits on top the metal & eventually loosens breaking away over time. KBS sealer seeps into the metal pores and interlocks with it for a more permanent seal. It can handle expansion & contraction of the tank too. Choose the kit for your size tank. The inside of the tank will look like brand new silver metal.

Yes – pour whatever is in the tank out and check with a flashlight to see if there is any rust inside. If there is rust there is a product called "Kreme" that is used to restore the insides of gas tanks. Get the gas tank "Kreme" kit. The first step is to put the acid etching solution in the tank and then remove it. The next step you put in a white liquid that coats the tank and hardens.

Talk to the folks at your local motorcycle dealership. There is a kit you can get that will get all the rust out of the tank and protect it against future corrosion. It’s a three-step system. The first step is a liquid like kerosene that you pour in the tank and swish around to get the rust out. The second step is a chemical etch that prepares the tank for the third step, which is a white polymer-looking liquid that lines the tank and prevents corrosion. I had to do the same thing to my old Honda, and as long as you follow the instructions to the letter it works like a charm.

I would recommend the product called "KREME" I have used it on several occasions and has worked very well…not only will it seal the leak but it will coat the tank and keep the rust from flaking off and causing problems in the carb. I suggest getting some LEAD shot and shaking it around in the gas tank to remove as much of the flaky rust as you can…(DO NOT USE BB’S they could cause a spark and explosion!!!) Then follow the directions that come with the KREME kit and you tank should be almost good as new…Good Luck !

i have done this to a 4-wheeler tank…..just get some fresh clean gas and slosh it around and dump it out…do this several times to get all the trash out….then if it has some small leaks you can take som epoxy and patch it from the outside of the tank…..if you do wind up replacing the tank be sure and check you can usually get a replacement made of plastic where you wont have to worry about this happening again
