how do i repair corrosion problem on volvo penta i/o unit on boat motor. looks like salt corrosion but is not.
Use a stainless steel brush to remove all loose corrosion. Prep with a good solvent such as acetone. Use a zinc chromate primer and then a finish paint suitable for outdrives. You can get factory original paint or aftermarket paint from any good marine supply. Replace the zinc anodes to help prevent further corrosion.

Some causes of this may be where you dock your boat. Make sure their are no shore cords laying in water . If you are near a steel piling this will cause it. High acidic content of water.
The best way to find out is to call your local boat service and ask them to do a reading of the water. I use a device made by mercury that takes an electrical reading then compare it to a chart on how high electrolysis is.
Stainless steel props come into factor also
As posted before clean all corrosion off thoroughly and prime and if you keep boat in all season use a good antifouling paint such as trilux.
You can also opt for aftermarket anticorrosion protection kit that mounts on transom and hooks up electrically to your battery system to help fight corrosion
