The area under my rear bumper is getting pretty rusty, I was originally gonna just get some paint and go over it, but I’ve just noticed there is a bit of a crack in the corner & there’s a bit of a hole there.
I was just wondering what the best way to repair this is – is there some kind of filler-type thing I can use to plug the gap?
Also once the hole is repaired, is it just a case of repainting the rusty bits, or do I have to apply some kind rust-preventing type substance?
In order to stop rust you must completely remove rust. You can not just paint over it. It will just keep rusting. It could get quite costly. Sometimes you must remove some good metal to get past the rust and replace it.
With the salt they put on the roads they make cars terribly disposable.

Sounds like you have a bit of a big problem. Surface rust can be washed away, but if you have deep rust, the kind that makes holes, you will have to almost cut this out and tack on new piece of sheet metal to fix it right.
Putting a filler over the rust will just make the rust worse one day. Go onto an autobody site, my favorite is Eastwood Company. They have all kinds of neat things for autobody and paint.

yes there are rust treatments on the market and remember rust is like a cancer it spreads to the next bit so try to get rid of it by cutting out and then repair the same

Yes, Rustoleum and a few others make a paint that will (with some preparation) turn rust back into paintable metal. Once this is done, just prime and repaint it.

if there is a hole you have to cut it out. prime it. then weld on a peace of scrap metal sand it down and paint in the spot
very very very easy job besides the welding.

POR-15 or Rust Bullet are a couple of rust conversion products to stop the rust from further oxidation and are paintable. KBS-coatings is another.

There’s only one best way… have a body shop cut it out and replace the rusted section.
POR 15 can be used to repair/stop surface rust.
