How do I clean rust of a steel gear?

by admin on August 31, 2010

I have a very old metal gear. It’s about 3 inches in diameter and covered in rust. I’m trying to clean it and make it metallic again. I’ve heard soaking ti in kerosene for a long time helps. Anything else?

soak it in transmission fluid it’ll come really clean then off to the buffing wheel ………
then clean it with a degreser sand lightly and spray it with paint , it’ll look sweet ~! ( rustoleum paint is the absolute best for anything metal)

Use a wire brush in your drill, or a wire brush on a bench grinder.

if you really want to get rid of the rust sand blast it and paint it immediately or it will rust even worse.
