How do I clean rust off a brass ashtray stand?

by admin on August 22, 2010

I have an old brass ashtray stand and it got left outside and is covered in rust I does anyone know how to get it clean?

You start with metal sand paper and sand till the rust is gone.
You can get different grits of this black metal sand paper and if you use the heavy then use finer grits when the rust has almost disapeard. Then you may want to seal it. lots a luck.

use a soft scrub cream or a little baking soda on a scrubber and clean it well.
you may have to do this several times before it comes clean.

Try putting ketchup on it. I’m dead serious ketchup cleans brass and maybe it can clean the rust…

If it’s actually rust, then you probably have a brass plated ashtray. Be careful about taking the rust off, as most of the brass plate will probably come with it.

You can buy some stripper pads (kind of plastic steel wool) in the hardware store and use that to rub off the rust. The next step up would be actual steel wool.

There are also some products you can find in automotive supply stores that you can spray on and it will help remove the heaviest rust. "Naval Jelly" is one such product.

Cut lemons and salt. If there is rust, it’s not solid brass so rub lightly and be careful.
