I have 2 cylinder heads that were left outside this summer. They both have some surface rust and I would like to know how to clean them before I send them to be ported and polished.
Don’twaste your time messing with this little problem.
When they get the heads in the shop, the first thing they will do is put them in the parts washer.
Then they will magna-flux them for cracks.
If you try to clean them before hand, you may do more damage.

.let the porter and polisher bead blast or walnut blast it should be part of the service.

If it is just light surface rust, you can use muratic acid. It is available at all Lowes and Home Depots. If it is caked, sand blast it. A good trick to home degrease heads also is to use Easy Off. Place the heads in a large garbage bag, spray them down with Easy off and let them set for two days. The fumes will clean em up like they just came out of the boiler.
