Is blue or yellow corrosion normal on a car battery?

by admin on August 26, 2010

Normally, the corrosion on my battery is white and powder-like, but today when I cleaned the terminals, the positive terminal was covered in a moist, paste-like light blue corrosion closest to the terminal and a yellow paste-like corrosion along the front edge of the blue corrosion. Is this normal? I’ve never seen colors other than a whitish color or anything near the paste-like consistency.

Surely you have sprayed some wrong chemicals on your battery. Now disconnect the terminals, with damp cloth soaked in ordinary soap/water clean the terminals and the battery all around, clean off any grease or dirt every where, first connect the plus term and then negative term, put a littel bit of grease on both terms. Hopefully you bettery will be long lasting, make sure the water level is upto the top mark.

it sounds like a batery acid mixing with the grease on the terminals . clean it off with a rag watch your skin apply some grease and see if it happens again if itdoes it could be a leak.

Sounds like decomposition of the battery post, not common but it does happen.

Never but Never put grease on a battery, attracts dirt and will conduct and drain the battery!

I HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE ON MANY VEHICLES AND IT IS CAUSED BY THOSE CHAIN OIL CHANGING STORES THAT SPRAY ALL THAT STUFF ON THE BATTERY.

CLEAN IT UP COMPLETELY AND MAINTAIN YOUR BATTERY YOURSELF AND IF NOT WATCH THE NEXT TIME YOUR OIL AND FILTER ARE CHANGED.

Normal clean off and coat with grease or use those anti-corrosion rings on the terminals. P.S. as to another answer I have used grease for over thirty years no battery drainage yet.

it is normal to have blue/white/yellow corrosion, clean the battery with good ol coke ( the kind that you drink) then remove the battery terminals and clean the connections with a wire brush
