To recognize it, the PVC Pipe Association convinced lawmakers to include corrosion-proof pipes in the bidding on water infrastructure projects. Built in 1998, the pedestrian bridge over Winnoski River in Montpelier, Vermont was expected to last for 30 to 40 years. No thanks to rust though, it’s now closed.
Heavily corroded underneath, inspectors said that the bridge is not safe anymore for use. The director of Montpelier Public Works, Todd Law, blamed the severe rust problem to salt use and leaching from the pressure-treated lumber. Though made of weathering steel, the supposed to be rust barrier to protect the bridge from corrosion failed.
